Nitrite is one of the most common water quality problems encountered by koi keepers, particularly in new ponds or ponds where the biological filter has been disturbed. Although it is less toxic than ammonia, nitrite can still become extremely dangerous if left untreated.
Often referred to as "Brown Blood Disease", nitrite poisoning prevents your koi's blood from carrying oxygen efficiently. Even when your pond contains plenty of dissolved oxygen, affected koi can slowly suffocate.
