Nitrate is the final stage of your pond's biological filtration process and, unlike ammonia and nitrite, it is far less toxic to koi. However, that does not mean nitrate should be ignored. Over time, elevated nitrate levels can contribute to poor water quality, encourage excessive algae growth and place your koi under long-term stress.
Many pond keepers mistakenly assume that because nitrate is less dangerous than ammonia or nitrite, it doesn't matter. In reality, consistently high nitrate levels can affect koi health, water clarity and the overall balance of your pond.

What Is Nitrate?
Nitrate (NOโ) is the final product of the nitrogen cycle. It is produced after beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then convert nitrite into nitrate.
The nitrogen cycle follows this simple process:
- Fish produce ammonia.
- Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite.
- A second group of beneficial bacteria convert nitrite into nitrate.
- Nitrate is then removed through water changes, aquatic plants or specialised filtration.
This natural biological process keeps your pond safe by removing the two most dangerous toxins โ ammonia and nitrite โ but nitrate will continue to accumulate unless it is actively removed.
Why Does Nitrate Build Up?
Unlike ammonia and nitrite, nitrate is not removed naturally by your biological filter. As beneficial bacteria continue processing fish waste every day, nitrate slowly accumulates within the pond.
The more fish you keep and the more they are fed, the faster nitrate will increase.
Common sources of nitrate include:
- Fish waste.
- Uneaten food.
- Heavy feeding.
- Decaying leaves and organic debris.
- Dead algae.
- Well-established biological filtration.
A small amount of nitrate is perfectly normal in every mature koi pond.
Seeing nitrate in your pond is actually a good sign. It confirms that your biological filter is successfully converting toxic ammonia and nitrite into a much safer compound.
Is Nitrate Dangerous to Koi?
Nitrate is considerably less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but prolonged exposure to high nitrate levels may still affect the long-term health of your koi.
Persistently elevated nitrate may contribute to:
- Reduced growth.
- Lower disease resistance.
- Increased stress.
- Poor water quality.
- Excessive blanket weed.

- 40โ80 ppm โ Acceptable but should be monitored.

- 100 ppm+ โ Excessive and should be reduced.

How Do You Test for Nitrate?

- Collect a clean water sample from approximately 15โ30cm below the pond surface.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
- Shake reagent bottles thoroughly if instructed.

- Regular partial water changes.
- Avoiding overfeeding.
- Removing organic debris before it decomposes.
- Maintaining healthy filtration.

- Growing aquatic plants where appropriate.

Regular water changes remain the simplest, safest and most effective way to control nitrate in almost every koi pond.
Water Changes โ The Best Long-Term Solution
The easiest way to remove nitrate is by replacing a proportion of your pond water with fresh, correctly treated water.
Most koi keepers perform regular water changes throughout the year to:
- Reduce nitrate.
- Replace essential minerals.
- Dilute dissolved waste.
- Improve overall water quality.
- Support healthy koi growth.
Smaller, regular water changes are generally far better than occasional large water changes, as they help maintain stable water chemistry.
Can Plants Remove Nitrate?
Yes. Aquatic plants naturally absorb nitrate as a nutrient for growth.
