🐟 Koi Nutrition, Food Types, and Feeding Cycles Guide
Feeding your Koi correctly is the most important factor in promoting optimal health, vibrant color, and maximum growth. Koi are poikilotherms (cold-blooded), meaning their digestive system efficiency is entirely dependent on water temperature. You must feed them based on the season.
1. The Biology of Koi Feeding
Koi are opportunistic omnivores, but their diet must be managed. Understanding their simple digestive tract is key:
No True Stomach: Koi lack a distinct stomach that uses acid to break down food. They have a basic muscular chamber, which means food needs to be easily digestible before it reaches the intestines.
Temperature Dependence: Below 8°C (46F), the digestive tract slows down dramatically, and food can sit undigested, potentially rotting in the gut and causing severe illness or death. Never feed below 8°C (46F).
Protein Requirement: Koi require a high-quality protein source. However, feeding too much protein when temperatures are low can strain their system and the biological filter (Ammonia spikes).
2. Seasonal Food Types & When to Use Them
The type of food should change based on the water temperature to match the Koi’s metabolic rate.
Food Type | Protein % | Water Temp Range | Purpose |
1. Wheatgerm (Low Protein) | 20%-30% | 8°C to 15°C (46F to 59F) | Highly digestible, low-stress food for transitional seasons (Spring/Autumn). Easiest on the delicate digestive system. |
2. Growth (High Protein) | 35%-45% | 16°C to 28°C (61F to 82F) | Used for rapid growth and maintenance during the summer. Contains higher protein and fats. Do not use in cool water. |
3. Colour Enhancing | 35%-40% | 18°C and above (64F) | Used alongside growth food to promote richer reds (Hi) and stronger blacks (Sumi), using ingredients like Spirulina or Astaxanthin. |
3. The Seasonal Feeding Schedule
Use a reliable floating thermometer to measure the water temperature (not the air temperature) and adjust the frequency accordingly.
Water Temperature | Activity Level | Frequency |
Below 8°C (46F) | Dormant | STOP FEEDING. |
8°C to 15°C (46F to 59F) | Slow Metabolism | Wheatgerm food only. Feed once every 2-3 days. |
16°C to 22°C (61F to 72) | Active Metabolism | Wheatgerm in the morning; Growth food in the afternoon. Feed 1-2 times daily. |
23°C and up (73F and up) | Peak Metabolism | Growth/Colour food. Feed 2-4 times daily (as much as they consume in 5 minutes). |
4. The 5-Minute Rule
The golden rule for all feeding is to feed only what the Koi can consume in 5 minutes.
Avoid Overfeeding: Excess food sinks and decomposes, spiking Ammonia and creating perfect conditions for disease (like Fin Rot and Ulcers).
Monitor: If pellets are floating after 5 minutes, you are feeding too much. Remove the excess food with a net.
